Phil Murphy, as he says, “grew up in a family that was middle class on a good day.” That has shaped Phil’s values, his priorities, and the kind of governor he will be.

Religion, basic values, work ethic, education, and civic awareness were pillars of family life. His father never graduated from high school, his mother worked as a secretary; they inspired Phil and his three siblings to pursue their educations and be active participants in civic life.

Phil put himself through Harvard on loans and part-time jobs. After earning a graduate degree at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, he started his career at the bottom, working his way up to help lead a major international business by learning how economies grow and create jobs.

Phil has helped lead local charities to support troubled teens and domestic abuse survivors, and these groups have changed thousands of lives for the better. Nationally, Phil served proudly as New Jersey’s sole representative on the board of the NAACP, the world’s oldest civil rights organization. He served as Finance Chair of the Democratic National Committee, helping Howard Dean on the “Fifty-State Strategy” that rebuilt the Democratic Party from the grassroots up; that effort helped return Congress to Democratic hands in 2006 and elect President Barack Obama in 2008. Phil also has led national and state task forces on education and public employee pensions and benefits.

In 2009, Phil answered President Obama’s call to service and became the U.S. Ambassador to Germany after his confirmation by the U.S. Senate. After returning home in 2013, Phil and his wife, Tammy, saw our state falling behind. They couldn’t sit by and watch hard working families struggling to stay even, much less get ahead. They founded New Start New Jersey as a “think and do” organization to rebuild the state’s economy from the middle class out — New Start New Jersey partnered with the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University to create the New Start Career Network, which is helping older, long-term unemployed residents once again actively compete for good jobs.

As governor, Phil will make New Jersey more fair and just for all residents. His vision would grow the middle class and jumpstart the state’s economy by targeting investments in people and infrastructure, reclaiming New Jersey’s mantle as a center of the STEM and innovation economies, protecting working families by raising the minimum wage and expanding earned sick leave for all, and protecting the middle class with real tax fairness.

Phil and Tammy live in Monmouth County and are the parents of Josh, Emma, Charlie, and Sam.

 

Key Initiatives

Economy & Jobs
Governor Murphy’s primary focus is building a stronger and fairer economy that works for every New Jersey family. Since the recession, incomes have been stagnant while costs of living continue to rise, making it difficult for middle-class and working-class families to get by, much less get ahead. Governor Murphy believes in strengthening our economy by reigniting the innovation economy that made New Jersey the Silicon Valley before there was a Silicon Valley, and investing in infrastructure to take advantage of our location between two major markets. He is committed to making New Jersey’s economy fairer by raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, expanding protections for workers such as paid sick leave, and providing tax relief to working families. Governor Murphy will also institute a renewed focus on workforce development, vocational training, and apprenticeship programs so that workers will have the skills they need to meet employers’ requirements.

Education
Our state’s economic future depends on giving our children the education they need to succeed in a 21st century economy where they will be competing with workers around the globe. While New Jersey is blessed with some of the best public schools and educators in the nation, significant disparities exist within our educational system. Governor Murphy is committed to fully funding the existing school funding formula, which was held up as a national model when passed, and opposes the unnecessary usage of standardized tests, particularly as graduation requirements. And money should never be a barrier to students who have the ability and drive to go to college, which is why he will work towards making community college free and four-year college more affordable.

Environment
Governor Murphy recognizes that climate change is a fact and an existential threat to our state, and that the effects are already being felt along our shoreline. While this is a crisis to be addressed, it is also an opportunity to build a clean energy economy with good-paying green jobs. Governor Murphy will seize this opportunity by restoring New Jersey’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and putting New Jersey on a road to 100 percent clean energy by 2050. He will accelerate the development of renewable energy sources by promoting solar energy and jumpstarting our offshore wind industry, where New Jersey should be a national leader given its location. In addition, he will ensure that our environmental efforts are appropriately focused on low-income communities who are disproportionately impacted by pollution, and protect the quality of our air and water supply.

Health
Governor Murphy believes that health care is a right, not a privilege, and will work to ensure that all New Jerseyans have access to affordable health care. The Affordable Care Act was a huge step in the right direction and reduced the uninsured population in the state by hundreds of thousands, and Governor Murphy will defend it against all attacks in Washington. He will fight back against any attempts to slash Medicaid funding or end the Children’s Health Insurance Program, which are crucial to many New Jerseyans. And Governor Murphy is committed to taking action at the state level to make health care more affordable and accessible.

Law & Justice
New Jersey has the shameful distinction of having the largest black-white incarceration gap of any state in the country. Governor Murphy will address this problem by bringing law enforcement and the community together, as he did when he brokered the first meeting between the head of the state PBA and the state chapter of the NAACP. He will end mass incarceration by pursuing the legalization of marijuana and comprehensively reviewing all criminal sentencing laws. Governor Murphy will also ensure that all of our communities are safe. That includes defending our immigrant communities that are being targeted by the federal government by ensuring that all New Jersey residents facing detention or deportation have access to legal representation. And he will also sign common-sense gun safety measures in order to stem the epidemic of gun violence that plagues our state.

Transportation
One of New Jersey’s greatest assets is its location, with access to two of the largest markets in the world. However, our state has squandered this advantage due to a failure to make the necessary investments in its infrastructure. The two current rail tunnels under the Hudson River are over 100 years old and rapidly deteriorating. After the termination of the Access to the Region’s Core project, which would have resulted in the opening of two new tunnels this year, Governor Murphy understands that the replacement Gateway Project is essential and will do everything possible to support it. Additionally, NJTransit has suffered from severe underfunding and mismanagement, which has seen fares soar while quality of service and safety have declined sharply. Governor Murphy is committed to turning NJTransit around by ensuring that funding is adequate, improving customer service, and putting transportation experts in charge.

In eight years as New Jersey’s first Lieutenant Governor and the 33rd Secretary of State, Kim Guadagno was a steadfast advocate for businesses and corporations statewide, creating an effective infrastructure for economic growth and job creation. She established the Partnership for Action – New Jersey’s multi-faceted economic development strategy, comprised of the Business Action Center, Choose New Jersey, the Economic Development Authority and the Secretary of Higher Education. She met with thousands of business and government leaders statewide and played an integral role in the creation of hundreds of thousands of jobs and the dramatic growth of new business startups. As Chair of the Red Tape Review Commission, Lt. Governor Guadagno successfully led a bipartisan initiative reducing regulatory burdens on businesses.

The Wall Street Journal profiled Lt. Governor Guadagno as possessing a “level of energy that has impressed members of the state’s influential business community.”

After two federal clerkships and five years of private practice, Lt. Governor Guadagno began her public service career as a federal prosecutor with the Organized Crime and Racketeering Strike Force in Brooklyn, New York. She later became an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York and the District of New Jersey, where she was twice awarded the U.S. Department of Justice’s highest honor for her prosecutions. Following her years of federal service, she became a senior member of the State of New Jersey Attorney General’s Office where she oversaw statewide criminal investigations. In 2001, Lt. Governor Guadagno left the public sector to work in private practice and also taught Legal Research and Writing at Rutgers School of Law in Newark for six years. In 2005, she was elected a commissioner in her hometown of Monmouth Beach and two years later, Guadagno became the first woman sheriff in Monmouth County where she led the 650-member, $65 million law enforcement agency until inaugurated New Jersey’s first Lieutenant Governor.

Steven J. Pozycki is Chairman and CEO of SJP Properties. Mr. Pozycki assembled SJP in 1981 and has since spearheaded the organization’s continued growth to become one of the most active and reputable real estate development companies in the New York Metropolitan region.

Prior to his founding SJP, Mr. Pozycki had 10 years of institutional experience in real estate finance, first with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. and then with Equitable Life Assurance Society. He also previously ran the finance office for Lincoln Property Company in New York City that became the firm’s in-house investment banking operation.

In 1981, Mr. Pozycki acquired and began developing his first real estate project under SJP Properties, a 182-acre corporate park in Parsippany, NJ, known as Morris Corporate Center. Since that time, he and the SJP Properties team have successfully developed more than 25 million square feet of ground-up real estate projects in partnership with major public and private institutions.

Mr. Pozycki is a member of the Board of Trustees of Monmouth University and a member of the Executive Advisory Board of Monmouth University’s Real Estate Institute, which has also honored him with its prestigious “Leadership Excellence Award.” He is very active in a number of civic and charitable organizations.

Tim Sullivan
Chief Executive Officer

Tim Sullivan serves as Chief Executive Officer of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (EDA).

In his role as CEO, Mr. Sullivan oversees the EDA’s strategic direction, leading policy and governance initiatives, and serves as the principal representative of the Authority throughout the State.

Mr. Sullivan most recently served as Deputy Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), where he oversaw State tourism and branding, brownfield redevelopment, transit-oriented development, and waterfront initiatives. Mr. Sullivan joined the DECD in January 2014 as Director of Brownfield, Waterfront, and Transit-Oriented Development, and became Deputy Commissioner in 2015.

Mr. Sullivan previously served as Chief of Staff to the New York City Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, focusing on transportation and transit-oriented development, brownfield redevelopment, waterfront and maritime/port redevelopment, public and affordable housing policy, small business support, infrastructure finance, and public/private partnerships.

Prior to joining city government in 2010, Mr. Sullivan worked at Barclays Capital as Chief of Staff to the Head of Global Investment Banking. He began his career in investment banking at Lehman Brothers in 2003 as a healthcare banker, focusing on mergers and acquisitions and capital markets transactions for leading companies in the managed care, biotechnology, and healthcare services sectors. Born and raised in Bergen County, Mr. Sullivan is a graduate of Georgetown University.

Jeffrey Gural is Chairman of GFP Real Estate LLC. GFP Real Estate LLC has an ownership interest in 41 properties, almost all of which are located in Manhattan. Mr. Gural, along with his son, Eric Gural and nephew, Brian Steinwurtzel are responsible for all future acquisitions and the managing and leasing of the 10 Million square feet that they have an ownership interest in.

Mr. Gural joined Newmark Knight Frank in 1972, and served as Chairman until 2017, after which he became Chairman Emeritus. Mr. Panepinto received a Bachelor of Arts in economics from George Washington University in 1997 and a Juris Doctorate from Seton Hall University, School of Law in 2000 where he was a recipient of multiple merit scholarships. He has been a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association since 2000. His last academic experience included continuing education courses in real estate finance and accounting at New York University in 2003.

She has expertise in the management and design of large-scale urban design and strategic master planning projects for both public and private clients. Kathleen Coviello oversees the Technology & Life Sciences Division (TLS) of the EDA. She, along with her team, are responsible for working closely with the early stage technology and life science companies and investors in the state and delivering the various Edison Innovation Fund products to this community.

Prior to joining the EDA, she spent over seventeen years in the banking industry, with the last eight focused exclusively on the NJ Technology Venture Lending Market. Her venture lending experience includes employment at Silicon Valley Bank, Comerica Bank and Progress’s Techbanc.

Coviello is active in the NJ entrepreneurial technology community and sits on the advisory and/or valuation boards of Edison Venture Fund, The Garden State Life Sciences Fund, and NJTC Venture Fund.

Dean Marchetto is the founding principal of Marchetto Higgins Stieve Architects established 1981 in Hoboken and expanded to Jersey City 2016. Dale Talde’s passion for cooking began at a young age in his native Chicago where he learned to prepare meals alongside his mother in the kitchen. The proud son of Filipino immigrants, he grew up immersed in his family’s cultural heritage while also enjoying the life of a typical American kid. A 1998 graduate of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America, Dale began his professional career in Chicago as part of the opening staff at two of the city’s most acclaimed eateries: Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Thai-inspired, French restaurant, Vong-Chicago; and Chef Shawn McClain’s New-American restaurant, Spring. Dale followed this with a stint consulting at Le Anne, a Vietnamese bistro in Chicago’s western suburbs. It was there, he developed a true passion for Southeast Asian cuisine.

Dale later joined Chef Carrie Nahabedian at her award-winning New-American restaurant, Naha. Under Chef Nahabedian, Dale learned the value of being a “locavore” and how to build relationships with local farmers, fishmongers and butchers. While Dale was cooking dinner at Naha, he also took a position cooking lunch for Kevin Shikami at his restaurant, Kevin. The opportunity to become a Chef de Cuisine in 2003 had Dale moving on to Opera, a modern Chinese restaurant.

In December 2005, Dale moved to NYC for the opportunity to work with Chef Masaharu Morimoto and restaurateur Stephen Starr at his eponymous Japanese restaurant. Continuing to work with STARR Restaurants, he then joined the kitchen of Buddakan, serving as Chef de Cuisine. In 2011, Dale was named Director of Asian Concepts for STARR Restaurants, consulting on various projects and assisting with the opening of Makoto in Bal Harbour, FL.

After six incredible years with STARR Dale took a gamble on Brooklyn that paid off and partnered with friends David Massoni and John Bush to form Three Kings Restaurant Group with the opening of TALDE Brooklyn in January 2012.

In addition to his work in the kitchen, Dale was also a three-time cheftestant on Bravo’s Emmy Award-winning culinary show, “Top Chef.” He competed in Season 4, “All Star” Season 8, “Top Chef Duels”, and became one of the show’s most popular cast members. Dale has competed on “Chopped”, “Iron Chef America”, “Knife Fight” and was also head judge on “Knife Fight” Season 4. In September of 2015 Grand Central Publishing released Dale’s first cookbook, “Asian American”, to rave reviews.

Dale lives in Fort Lee, New Jersey with his wife Agnes, and when he’s not in the kitchen you can find him at the neighborhood courts playing basketball.

Eyal Shuster is the founder and president of The Shuster Group, an affiliated group of companies that construct, develop, manage, and invest in commercial multifamily and mixed-use real estate. After completing his service in the Israeli Army reaching the rank of Lieutenant, Eyal began his career as a crane operator, working his way up through different trades, gaining experience in all related fields of the construction business. Eyal graduated from MALTAB (the Institute for Technology of Construction in Israel) as a certified project manager and General Contractor. In 1998 he moved to the United States to study Finance at Rutgers University. While completing his coursework, Eyal worked for a local developer until forming Shuster Management LLC in 2001. In 2002, soon after graduating with High Honors, Eyal continued to grow his construction business and started to utilize his expertise and capital toward his own development projects.

Today, The Shuster Group manages a portfolio of over 700 units, has been directly involved in over 50 real estate projects in New York City and Northern New Jersey, and has the track record, resources and the capabilities to handle all aspects of multifamily and mixed-use real estate investment and development, from ground-up construction, conversion and renovation, to property management and disposition.

With over 30 years of experience, Mr. Szura leads the Langan’s Landscape Architecture + Planning group with staff situated across three offices. He has orchestrated the design, management and construction of numerous complex projects nationwide and internationally and has handled all aspects of project development as the lead designer on numerous campus planning projects for major universities, corporations, institutions and schools. Mr. Szura is also an expert on community planning and regeneration work, urban and sustainable design issues, and waterfront and Brownfield redevelopment projects.

Mr. Szura has worked on many notable projects throughout his career.
